First Steps To Pursuing Collegiate Athletics

Updated: Sep 11

Many students aspire to participate in collegiate sports. While some are determined to reach Division I, others prioritize academic fit and seek athletic opportunities accordingly.

Regardless of whether you aim to compete at the highest level or participate in intramural sports, it is essential to approach decisions with realism and ensure alignment with both your athletic and academic objectives.

To begin your journey as a collegiate athlete, your first step is to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center

There are two registration options available through the NCAA, depending on the division you intend to pursue:

  • The Profile Page is free for all students and can be accessed as early as high school entry. It is particularly suitable for those considering Division III programs or evaluating their best options.

  • The Certification Account is mandatory for students seeking recruitment into Division I and Division II institutions. This process requires a $100 fee for domestic students and submission of an official high school transcript.

Beyond the initial registration, it is important to stay organized throughout your high school years. Track your academic progress, if you are looking at selective schools you will need to make sure you are taking a rigorous courseload and that you are hitting your target GPA.  At the very least, make sure you are fulfilling the NCAA eligibility requirements.

Equally crucial is fostering relationships with coaches and mentors who can offer guidance and honest feedback about your potential at the collegiate level. Attending showcase events, tournaments, and campus visits can help you gain exposure and better understand the expectations of various programs. Reach out proactively to coaching staffs, provide up-to-date athletic resumes and highlight reels, and demonstrate genuine interest in their teams and academic offerings.

Finally, remember that your collegiate journey is unique. Take time to research schools, evaluate scholarship opportunities, and keep both short-term and long-term goals in mind. Making informed decisions rooted in your values will ensure a rewarding experience that supports both your academic growth and athletic ambitions.
