Heather McCarthy, MAT, M.Ed

Founder, Lead College Counselor

For more than 30 years, I have worked with students and families as an educator, advisor, and advocate. I founded Holistic College Counseling because I believe the best educational guidance begins with understanding the whole student; who they are, how they learn, what matters to them, and where they hope to go.

My career has given me the opportunity to work with students across an incredibly wide range of academic paths and experiences. I spent nearly 20 years as an educator before moving into higher education, including a decade at Boston University, where I worked in academic advising and student-athlete services. Along the way, I have supported high-achieving students, Division I athletes, first-generation and international students, students with learning differences, and students who simply needed someone to help them recognize their strengths and find their direction.

Those experiences shape the way I work today. I don’t believe there is one right path through high school or one formula for a successful college application. I take the time to get to know each student and help them make thoughtful, intentional choices that reflect who they are—not who they think a college wants them to be.

For families, my role is often to bring clarity and structure to a process that can feel increasingly complicated. I help students break big decisions into manageable steps, understand the “why” behind the guidance I give them, and take greater ownership of their path. When it is time to apply to college, we bring those pieces together into an application that is strategic, cohesive, and authentically theirs.

As Holistic College Counseling has grown, so has my vision for what educational consulting can provide. Today, I lead a team of specialists whose expertise allows us to support students in areas including college admissions, athletic recruiting, executive functioning, standardized testing, and learning support. Rather than expecting one person to be an expert in everything, I believe families benefit from having the right expertise available when they need it.

At the center of all of this work is something very simple: I want students to feel known, capable, and confident in the choices they are making. College admission matters, but so does the young person who emerges from the process. My goal is to help students understand what they bring to the table, communicate it authentically, and ultimately find an educational environment where they can thrive.
